Now This Is How You Are Supposed To Drink At A Stag Party…

Posted: September 9, 2012 in Just another great tasting

One of the guys in my tasting group is throwing caution into the wind and tying the knot in two weeks.  But, as a married guy knows, you can not get married until you had your ‘ceremonial’ right of passage…yes, The Stag Party.  Every stag party is different from the next and it even made me think back to mine spending a solid 5 hours at the Hofbrau Huas in Las Vegas, slamming down half gallon mugs of Hofbrau Dunkle until my vision was blurry, singing german songs that I didnt know the words to (except for Ein Prosit) and racking up the largest bar tab I have ever been a part of…ah memories.

Anyways, back to the present, Brandon was having your typical stag party…fire hall, cheap beer flowing, sheet pizzas, poker everywhere, door prizes, etc….except he put his own twist on it by having a good beer tasting and busting out some of his rarest bottles.  You know you are in for a good time when your ‘common’ beer of the night is Founders Breakfast Stout.

This turned out to be an unintentional barrel aged Sour and barrel aged Stout night per se with the gem of the night obviously being Goose Island Bourbon County Rare, which was barrel aged for 2 years in 23-year old Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrels.  Here was the line up as the night progressed…

  • Founders Brewing Breakfast Stout (MI) ~ American Double/Imperial Stout ~ 8.3% ABV ~ 4.40 /5 Rating.
  • Fremont Brewing Kentucky Dark Star (WA) ~ American Double/Imperial Stout ~ 9.5% ABV ~ 4.10 /5 Rating.
  • Drie Fonteninen Armand’4 Oude Gueze Lente (Spring) (Belgium) ~ Gueze ~ 6.0% ABV ~ 4.48 /5 Rating.
  • Goose Island Rare Bourbon County Stout (IL) ~ American Double/Imperial Stout ~ 13.0% ABV ~ 4.95 /5 Rating.
  • Freetail Brewing Ananke (TX) ~ American Wild Ale ~ 5.8% ABV ~ 4.20 /5 Rating.
  • Captain Lawrence Brewing Mother Barrel Select (NY) ~ American Wild Ale ~ 10.0% ABV ~ 4.23 /5 Rating.
  • Fantome Saison D’Erezee – Hiver (Belgium) ~ Saison/Farmhouse Ale ~ 8.0% ABV ~ 3.55 /5 Rating.
  • Goose Island Vanilla Bourbon County Stout (IL) ~ American Double/Imperial Stout ~ 13.0% ABV ~ 4.08 /5 Rating.
  • Three Floyds Brewing Zes Zes Zes (IN) ~ Saison/Farmhouse Ale ~ 8.5% ABV ~ 4.43 /5 Rating.
  • Saint Arnold Brewing Pmpkinator (TX) ~ American Double/Imperial Stout ~ 10.0% ABV ~ 4.10 /5 Rating.
  • The Bruery Chocolate Rain (Batch 1) (CA) ~ American Double/Imperial Stout ~ 19.5% ABV ~ 4.00 /5 Rating.
  • Drie Fonteinen Hommage (Belgium) ~ Lambic – Fruit ~ 6.0% ABV ~ 3.98 /5 Rating.

I know that some of you may be laughing at the numbers of stouts opened in one night…and for those of you who do not know, I am known as The Stout Hater in our tasting group.  Needless to say, I think I have had my fill of stouts for a long while.  Just remember for those of that are laughing, you may think you have had the last laugh but it is I who will be laughing in 4 weeks when I am in Denver CO for the GABF…and you are not.  (last laugh ensues).
